Events

The Dereham Society meets on the 4th Wednesday of the month, 7:30pm, at Dereham Library, 59 High Street,
Dereham NR19 1DZ.

We currently have a break in our program of monthly meetings (partly due to the Dereham Festival taking place from 19th May to 16th June 2012). We hope to resume a monthly program in autumn 2012. If you have any ideas for talks we could have, please get in contact with members of the committee. Take a look below to see the kind of things we had during 2011.

Due to changes in hire charges, the Dereham Society committee is reviewing where we hold our meetings. Please keep an eye on the website, or the newsletter for details of future events, and of where they will be held.

The Dereham Society committee meets monthly, on (or around) the second Thursday of the month, to plan the program and to discuss issues of importance to the town (such as planning and council policies). These meetings are open to any member who wishes to attend. Please contact the chairman [Philip Morton] if you wish to attend the committee meeting, for details of when and where we meet.

Miss Savidge moves her house

This is a remarkable tale of triumph over adversity as May Savidge refuses to let her 500-year-old house in Ware, Herts, be demolished to make way for a road. Instead she moves it brick by brick, tile by tile, 100 miles to Wells, Norfolk, where she single handedly rebuilt it. Aged 60 when the rebuilding starts, her work is left to be completed by her niece Christine Adams who will be giving a talk on this extraordinary story.
